Dysport / Botox / Xeomin

Do you have lines between your brows that make you look angry all the time? Lines around the corners of your eyes? Lines across your forehead?

If you are over 35, odds are the answers to these questions is “yes”. All of these lines are called “dynamic wrinkles”. These are wrinkles that are caused by muscles pulling at the skin when we make expressions. Skin is very elastic because it is full of collagen. But, like anything stretchy, if you pull on it too many times, it starts to lose its “snap”. Every time we make an expression, our muscles pull on our skin, over time this breaks down our collagen, and our skin loses its ability to spring back to it’s normal, smooth shape. When this happens, and our expression lines become “etched” into our skin.

The good news? It is both preventable and treatable! Since the cause of this aging is muscles pulling on the skin, when we relax those muscles, we can take away your lines, and also prevent new lines from forming. We treat dynamic wrinkles using Neuromodulators – they relax your muscles – removing and preventing lines in the upper face. Botox and Dysport are common brands of Neuromodulators.

In addition to effectively treating wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, Botox and Dysport can also create a lovely non-surgical brow lift, reduce “bunny lines” in your nose and more. Within a week after your treatment, you will see gradual and natural appearing improvement in moderate to severe wrinkles. Lines continue to improve for up to a month and results last for 3-4 months.

Even better, since Botox and Dysport relax the muscles that cause lines to form in the first place, getting regular treatments can effectively hit the “pause” button on the aging process itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Dysport® different from Botox®?

The honest answer – it really isn’t. The same way that ibuprofen is the active ingredient in both Motrin and Advil –Dysport® and Botox® are both forms of the same medication: Botulinum Toxin Type A.

However – since Dysport® does not have the carrier proteins that Botox® has (it is sometimes called “naked Botox”!) – it acts slightly faster. Dysport® will show up in 3-5 days, whereas Botox results become visible over 5-10. Dysport® also gives a slightly more “controlled” look – making it a better choice for patients with deeper lines, for those who metabolize Botox® quickly, or people who desire a smoother look.

What can I expect from Botox®

Before your treatment, your provider will discuss your goals, and areas of concern to decide where to inject the medication. Some patients choose to numb the area with a cold pack prior to injecting. The entire procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Discomfort is minimal and brief—most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. There’s no downtime and most patients return to work or their normal activities. We recommend applying a cold compress to the treatment area to help reduce any soreness or residual swelling. Some patients experience minor redness or bruising, but these are easily concealed with makeup. Within days, you’ll see a marked improvement which may continue to improve for as long as a week and should last up to four months.

How do neuromodulators like Botox®/Dysport® work?

When very low doses of neuromodulators are administered directly into the overactive muscles that cause lines to form, they relax those muscles, which causes the lines to melt away. After a treatment with Botox®/Dysport® you can frown, smile, or look surprised—without the furrows, creases, and wrinkles etching into your skin.

Do neuromodulators prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming?

Yes! One of the most remarkable things about Botox®/Dysport® is that not only do they reduce the appearance of existing lines, they also prevent the formation of new ones – effectively “stopping the clock” on part of the aging process.

Is Botox®/Dysport® safe?

Dysport® has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of conditions from severe muscles spasms to migraine headaches. Neuromodulators have been used for more than 40 years with no long-term side effects.

Are the Dysport® Injections painful?

Neuromodulator injections are done with a very fine needle, and most people compare it to a small “pinch” or bug bite.

What are the side effects of neuromodulator injections?

The most common side effects are mild bruising at the injection site. Temporary drooping of the eyelids, headaches, and flu-like symptoms are rare side effects of the treatment. These side effects are never permanent and will reverse in a few weeks.

What should I do after a Dysport® treatment?

You should not engage in strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after your treatment. Avoid anything that applies direct pressure to the injected area – such as tight hats, ski or swim goggles, or massage tables for 24 hours. Avoid blood thinners such as ibuprofen, aspirin, or red wine for 24 hours – as this can make a bruise more likely to form.

How soon will I see results and how long will they last?

Results last for 3 months on average. You will start to see results in a few days for Dysport®.

Will my lines look worse if I choose not to continue treatments?

No. If you chose to stop treatment your lines will gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance.

Which type of wrinkles respond best to neuromodulator injections?

Only dynamic wrinkles (those caused by the movement of the facial muscles) respond to Dysport® injections. Wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes are the most responsive. Wrinkles due to skin aging and sun damage or loss of subcutaneous volume and support will not improve with Dysport® injections. However – all of these areas will!

  • Forehead
  • 11’s (lines between your eyebrows)
  • Brow Lift
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Bunny lines (lines along the sides of your nose)
  • Oral commissures, upper lip & chin (lifts the corners of the mouth, reduces “smokers lines”)
  • Platysmal bands (softens lines on the neck)
  • Underarms (stops excessive sweating)
