How does Advanced Skin Resurfacing Work?

With Advanced Skin Resurfacing, we can slow – and even reverse – the aging process and keep you looking younger and healthier for longer. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is made up of 3 key layers – the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer.

There are many lasers available on the market, but the Nouvaderm that we use at RESTOR is state-of-the-art for two reasons. The downtime is a fraction of what patients had to deal with in the past for a full resurfacing, which means that you can be back to your normal routine in a day or two. Also, it  is safe for all skin types and conditions because it  produces less heat than similar technologies on the market. With minimal discomfort, the only anesthetic most people will need is a numbing cream, making it a fast and extremely affordable treatment.

What is Advanced Skin Resurfacing?

Advanced Skin Resurfacing is a laser treatment that stimulates the body’s natural collagen and elastin production to provide healthier, younger-looking skin. This is achieved through non-ablative laser energy, which gently heats targeted tissue in the deeper layers of the skin while leaving the surface layer intact, typically resulting in little to no downtime when compared to the full ablative lasers of the past. Advanced Skin Resurfacing is effective for all skin types, with the depth of the treatment tailored to the severity of one’s skin concerns. Patients often complete an Advanced Skin Resurfacing session during their lunch break and can resume normal activities immediately for a simple, yet powerful, way to repair sun-damaged skin, reduce fine lines, and renew a dull or uneven complexion.

What areas can be treated with Advanced Skin Resurfacing?

Advanced Skin Resurfacing can be safely used on any area of the body where you have fine lines and sun damage. The most common area of treatment is, of course, the face, followed by the neck, chest, arms, hands, and shoulders. At RESTOR, we like to talk about the “tabletop” presentation. We want all of the skin that is visible when we are sitting at a table to have a unified, lustrous, and glowing appearance – so what we do to our faces, we should also be doing to our necks, décolleté, and hands. A good rule of thumb is for every four treatments you do on your face, you should do one on your “tabletop.” The Tabletop’s evil twin? Floating Head Syndrome—where the face appears 20 years younger than the neck. Don’t let it happen to you!

Who is a candidate for Advanced Skin Resurfacing?

Advanced Skin Resurfacing is appropriate for anyone with sun damage, fine lines, melasma (Yes! I did say Melasma! Keep reading!), or anyone looking for a brighter skin tone and improved texture. Advanced Skin Resurfacing is safe for all skin types and colors and can be used even when your skin is tanned.

What does an Advanced Skin Resurfacing treatment feel like?

As the laser passes over your skin, a feeling of warm tingling is common. The intensity of this sensation varies based on the type of treatment being performed, but most people find it is very comfortable with numbing cream. We also offer Pro-Nox (or laughing gas) at RESTOR if any patient requests it.  After the session is complete, it is normal for the skin to feel hot and tight for 4 to 6 hours – similar to the way it feels after a sunburn

How many Advanced Skin Resurfacing treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed to achieve optimal results can vary from patient to patient depending on the condition(s) being treated, the patient’s goals for treatment, and tolerance for downtime. During your first consultation, a member of our team will review your desired results, skin type, and primary skin concerns and will help create a customized treatment plan that will help you achieve your optimal results.

Can Advanced Skin Resurfacing be combined with other treatments?

Yes! In fact, it is a great complement to other treatments such as IPL, microneedle RF, and regular microneedling. It can be done in the same treatment session to enhance results without adding any additional healing time.

Since Advanced Skin Resurfacing opens microchannels in the skin, after your treatment we can apply a masque infused with medical-grade topicals, which will be able to travel through the open microchannels deep into the skin – enhancing their efficacy. You can choose from PDRN (a natural healing and collagen-boosting molecule that will enhance the laser’s ability to remove pigment) or hyaluronic acid (a treatment designed to draw water deep into your skin to moisturize from the inside out). Ask us which one is right for you!

What results can I expect from my Advanced Skin Resurfacing treatment?

You should see a visible improvement in your skin tone and texture following your first Advanced Skin Resurfacing treatment. With each additional treatment session, you will experience continued improvement in unwanted pigmentation, acne scarring, uneven skin texture, and the overall quality of your skin. Individual results may vary.

Is there downtime with Advanced Skin Resurfacing?

The downtime varies from 4 to 6 hours of mild redness (like a sunburn) to a few days, depending on your specific treatment and skin. However, you can wear makeup 24 hours after an Advanced Skin Resurfacing treatment and can still attend events, go to work, etc. Most of our patients return to their normal routines within a day or two of their treatment session. A member of our expert staff will discuss further post-treatment skin care with you following your session to ensure you achieve the best results.
