We’ve come a long way in accepting that body hair is something normal. However, we also know that a dress or a bikini always looks better without hair poking out. Using a razor can lead to unwanted effects like razor rashes, and we don’t always have time to shave every few days. Waxing is an option, but it comes with discomfort we’ll never really be ok with. At RESTOR Medical Spa, we offer laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal is an alternative that helps remove unwanted body hair for good. No more shaving or waxing; just areas of smooth skin. However, you have to be prepared before your appointment if you want the best results. Here’s what you should do.
What Is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses a concentrated light beam (i.e., a laser) to permanently remove unwanted hair. The treatment works by targeting the pigment in the follicle, which is then absorbed by the melanin. The light is turned into heat upon contact with the pigment, destroying the follicle from the root.
You should know that the procedure is mostly effective when the hair is in its anagen (growth) phase. Not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, which means you need multiple sessions to remove the hair in the treated area. Our providers at RESTOR Medical Spa recommend that you get around six to eight treatments.
Who Should Get Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal works best on individuals with lighter skin and darker hair. You need pigment in the follicles, which means that individuals with light hair won’t see much improvement. Those with darker skin can feel more discomfort than fairer-skinned people, as the laser can target the melanin in there too.
Keep in mind that laser hair removal potentially targets all sources of pigment in the skin. This means that those with tattoos, especially using darker inks, can experience more discomfort while risking discoloration.
Preparation Steps Before the Procedure
Laser hair removal works best if you prep the area in the weeks before the procedure. Here’s what you’ll have to do:
1. Don’t Wax or Pluck the Hair
As mentioned, laser hair removal targets the melanin in the roots to destroy the follicle. For that to happen, the follicle has to be there. Refrain from plucking and waxing your skin for four to six weeks, as it gives the root enough time to grow. You can shave the hair in the meantime, which brings us to the next step.
2. Shave Before the Appointment
The root has to be there, but the rest of the grown hair doesn’t have to be. In fact, excess surface hair can lead to discomfort, as the laser will seek out the melanin on the surface. Aside from the burning sensation, it could also affect the path of the laser. If there’s no hair on the surface, the laser will go straight to the root.
3. Avoid Tanning
Before you get laser hair removal, avoid activities that could end in you getting tanned. This could cause excess melanin to form on the skin, which attracts the beams of the laser. This includes tanning beds and self-tanners, not just sunlight. Plus, excess sunlight exposure can irritate the skin, which eventually leads to blistering.
4. Don’t Use Lotions
The laser needs a clear path toward the hair follicle, and lotions can prevent that. They create a barrier that scatters the light while putting you at risk of irritation. It’s best you simply wash the skin with soap and rinse it off with clean water before the treatment.
5. Check Your Meds
Some types of medicine, such as birth control or antibiotics, can increase photosensitivity of the skin. Talk with our providers about the medicine you are taking to avoid unnecessary risks of discomfort. If you can’t stop the treatment, our providers will use that information to adjust the laser accordingly.
