Taking care of your skin properly starts with understanding your skin type. Think you’re dealing with Dry and Normal skin? Read our introductory guide to the six fundamental skin types to help identify what skin type you have.

To refresh your memory, Dry skin refers to how much oil your skin produces. As you probably guessed, people with Dry skin produce less oil, and therefore need more moisture in their home care. Normal skin isn’t overly prone to inflammation – which includes redness, rashes, and acne – but can become inflamed if you are too aggressive with it. If you’re using the right products, Dry and Normal skin will flourish!

How do I know if I have Dry and Normal skin?

You probably have Dry and Normal skin if:

  • About an hour after you wash your face, but before you put on any products, you skin feels tight, or even flaky.
  • You have very few visible pores.
  • If you don’t moisturize, your skin will feel tight or flaky.
  • You never (or almost never) have acne.
  • Trying new products sometimes causes you to get red, itchy or inflamed.
  • You have a few broken capillaries in your skin and occasionally struggle with redness.
  • You may sometimes experience rashes or hives on your skin.

What can I do to improve my Dry and Normal skin?

Dry skin needs a little extra help to stay moisturized. If you can keep your skin adequately moisturized, it will respond better to medical grade products and treatments to help reverse the signs of aging, if that’s one of your beauty goals.

How can I treat my Dry and Normal skin at home?

When you’re washing your skin, opt for a medium strength exfoliating cleanser: it shouldn’t agitate your skin, but it should help slough off dead skin to keep your skin young and healthy. Your moisturizer should be thick and lipid-based, to help make up for the lack of lipid production in your Dry skin.

When it comes to at home anti-aging, Dry and Normal skin should tolerate mid-strength Retinol and Vitamin C products well. Retinols can dry you out, so be sure to supplement them with your moisturizer. Retinols will be the single best thing you can do for your skin: they not only prevent aging, but reverse it. These products have been a mainstay of esthetic dermatology for 40 years, and every dermatologist I know uses them religiously.

What Medical Grade treatments will my Dry and Normal skin respond the best to?

When treated properly, Normal skin can be as strong as Resilient skin. Your skin can get great anti-aging results from treatments like microneedling, which helps rebuild our collagen stores and reduce fine lines. Regular dermaplanes will allow your at-home regimen to penetrate more deeply, and should be done monthly. I would recommend light to medium peels only – nothing too aggressive. If you want to fix pigmentation, try IPL laser treatments; your skin will respond beautifully!

Treatment Plan for Dry and Normal Skin

To recap, here’s what you should consider when caring for your dry and normal skin:

  • Use a thick moisturizer to supplement lipid production and prepare your skin for other treatments
  • Your skin is resilient enough to benefit from Retinol and Vitamin C treatments, with proper moisturizing
  • Invest in microneedling and dermaplanes to keep the skin looking fresh and youthful
